Fifty years after Gérald Genta created the Ingenieur SL, IWC Schaffhausen celebrates Reference 1832 with two limited anniversary editions of the Ingenieur Automatic in 40 mm and 35 mm.
50 Years — And as Visionary as Ever
In 1976, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, created by designer and artist Gérald Genta. The watch gave IWC's technical Ingenieur an entirely new aesthetic identity, defined by a bold bezel, textured dial and seamlessly integrated bracelet.
Half a century later, those design codes remain central to the modern Ingenieur. The 50th Anniversary editions connect the current collection even more directly to its origins, introducing brushed silver-plated dials inspired by a rare version of Reference 1832 from the 1970s.
Why the Ingenieur SL Mattered
During the 1970s, Gérald Genta helped establish a new category of stainless-steel luxury sports watches. The Ingenieur SL represented IWC within this new design language, combining technical roots with a much more architectural approach to the case and bracelet.
The distinctive bezel with five recesses, textured dial and integrated bracelet were conceived as parts of one continuous design. Those details ultimately became the blueprint for the modern Ingenieur.
Yet the original watch was still unmistakably an Ingenieur. A soft-iron inner case protected its Calibre 8541 from magnetic fields, continuing the anti-magnetic functionality that had defined the collection from its beginnings.
From Overlooked Design to Modern Icon
The Ingenieur SL's status today was far from guaranteed. Its story includes an unsuccessful original production run, decades outside the spotlight and an eventual return to the design language first established by Genta.

Production Comes to an End
IWC initially marketed the watch heavily toward engineers, and the visionary design did not become a commercial success. Only 598 pieces were produced between 1976 and 1982.

The Ingenieur Automatic 40 brings IWC back to the visual language of Reference 1832 while updating its ergonomics, construction and finishing for contemporary wear.

Genta's Design, Reengineered
When the Ingenieur Automatic 40 arrived in 2023, IWC did not simply reproduce Reference 1832. Instead, the design was carefully translated into a modern watch with improved proportions, ergonomics and surface finishing.
The bezel is secured to the case ring by five functional screws, giving each element a technical purpose rather than treating the screws as purely decorative.
The dial introduced a new “grid” structure made up of fine lines and squares, while the integrated bracelet connects through its middle link to create a more ergonomic transition between case and wrist.
What Makes an Ingenieur an Ingenieur?
Reference 1832 established a group of recognizable design codes that continue to shape the collection, even as their execution has evolved over five decades.
The Bezel
Genta's original bezel featured five characteristic recesses. On the modern Ingenieur, five functional screws secure the bezel to the case ring.
The Dial
Texture has remained central to the watch's identity. Today's Ingenieur uses an intricate grid structure of small lines and squares to create visual depth.
The Bracelet
The integrated bracelet remains fundamental to the silhouette. Its modern middle-link attachment improves articulation and comfort on the wrist.
The Architecture
Case, bezel and bracelet are designed to read as one continuous structure, preserving the architectural character that distinguished Reference 1832.
From Three Hands to High Complications
The modern Ingenieur has expanded well beyond the Automatic 40. Since its return, IWC has introduced additional case sizes, new dial colors and advanced case materials while extending the Genta-inspired architecture into more complicated watchmaking.
The 2026 collection includes the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 in lightweight Grade 5 titanium as well as the Ingenieur Tourbillon 41, the first Gérald Genta-inspired Ingenieur to feature a flying minute tourbillon positioned at 6 o'clock.
Against that broader evolution, the 50th Anniversary editions return attention to the design that started this chapter of the Ingenieur story.
A Rare Reference Revisited
The anniversary editions do more than introduce a new dial color. IWC looked back to a rare version of Reference 1832 from the 1970s, using its distinctive appearance as the inspiration for the new silver-plated dials.
A brushed finish gives the silver surface a directional texture that changes subtly with the light, creating a visual link between the anniversary watches and the historic piece that inspired them.
The commemoration itself is deliberately understated: the Ingenieur logo incorporates the number “50” as a discreet reference to the anniversary.
Two Sizes, One Anniversary
IWC offers the 50th Anniversary design in two case sizes, allowing the same historic reference point to be interpreted at different proportions.

The 40 mm edition places the anniversary treatment within the proportions of the contemporary Ingenieur Automatic 40, creating the most direct link between today's core model and the historic Reference 1832.
Its brushed silver-plated dial is inspired by the rare 1970s variant that forms the visual basis of the anniversary release, while the subtle “50” integrated into the Ingenieur signature identifies the milestone.
The result retains the modern Ingenieur's architectural case, functional bezel screws and integrated bracelet while introducing a dial treatment rooted directly in the model's history.

The second anniversary edition translates the same design into a 35 mm case, providing a more compact expression of the integrated Ingenieur architecture.
IWC developed the smaller case size to offer an ergonomic fit on smaller wrists without changing the essential character of the anniversary edition.
The brushed silver-plated dial and “50” signature are shared with the 40 mm reference, allowing the two watches to read as a coherent anniversary pair rather than separate interpretations.
